The Storyteller: An Exhibition in Honor of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindorn's 60th Birthday
This exhibition, a collaboration between the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and the private museum of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at Suan Pathum royal residence, marks the auspicions occasion of Her Royal Highness’s 60th birthday anniversary. It will open on 1st June 2015 and will run until 2016.
The exhibition highlights Her Royal Highness’s great interests in art, culture, science, and archaeology and Her efforts to assist His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen in improving Thai people’s lives. Naturally curious and encouraged by the support of Their Majesties, Her Royal Highness has been studying the arts and sciences since childhood. Her duties have kept Her traveling throughout Thailand and abroad, where She has had the opportunity to gather innovative ideas that can be put to use to further Her philanthropic aims at home. In the course of Her official and private travels, Her Royal Highness has visited countless museums, galleries, botanical gardens, and other significant spots on virtually every continent. In the process, She has collected a wide variety of objects, some ordinary, some rare, many of which were gifts. Each piece represents a memorable experience or learning opportunity for Her Royal Highness; they serve as Her window into other cultures and ways of living, as well as Her own. Their importance to HRH Princess Sirindhorn is demonstrated by the care with which she has categorized and preserved them, and the ways that she uses and shares them in Her work.
As a lifelong learner, Her Royal Highness is also a great lover of books. From a very young age, books have given her insight into history, geography, biography, and culture. It was from books that She learned foreign languages, books that stoked Her considerable writing talent in both prose and poetry, and books that encouraged her imagination to soar. She has several publications to Her credit, the proceeds of which support the royal foundations. Her private library, which was founded with a few hundred publications, now numbers one hundred thousand volumes.
The exhibition will showcase a variety of items from the collection, which together tell the story of Her Royal Highness’s 50 years of inquiry, adventure, and devotion to Thailand and its people.
