The Discussion of The History of Phraewa and Its Development into Modern Cloth

Held on September 26, the program focused on the history of phrae wa (gold brocade) and its development into modern cloth, and was held in gratitude for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s recognition of phrae wa as an important aspect of Thai cultural heritage, which allowed for its preservation, development, and promotion.

The day’s speakers included Thanpuying Charungjit Teekara, Her Majesty´s Deputy Private Secretary; Mrs. Kammai Yokasing, the leader of the SUPPORT Foundation’s phrae wa weaving group at Ban Phon in Kalasin province, northeastern Thailand; Mr. Boonchai Tongcharoenbuangam of the Fine Arts Division, Bureau of the Royal Household; Mrs. Pongchayat Ponata, a phrae wa weaver from Ban Phon; and Mr. Udom Riantrakool,  renowned collector of historic Southeast Asian textiles.  The program finished with a demonstration of a local dance, “Rum Phrae Wa Kalasin,” in the museum’s auditorium.
