Training Workshop on Contrasting Textile Conservation Methods for Southeast Asia

This training workshop, organised by SEAMEO SPAFA and the newly opened Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, invited participants from museums and art galleries in the region to provide them with the necessary knowledge on basic textile conservation. The focus of the training addressed care of textiles specifically in the tropical climate, and utilize the facilities, expertise and materials of the QSMT to engage and teach participants, and explore conservation options which are low-cost, practical, and locally available.

Background Information/Statement of the Problem

A large number of textile collections in Southeast Asian museums and art galleries are subjected to rapid deterioration due to the hot and humid tropical climate and the lack of knowledge and skills among the staff in charge of the collections. Specialized training in textiles conservation is needed to help the museums and art galleries improve the state of conservation of their textile collections.

Objectives

• To provide a textile preservation forum for museum and collections professionals working with textile collections in Southeast Asia with the focus on tropical climate
• To equip participants with conservation knowledge which will improve the state of conservation of Southeast Asian textile collections

Methods to Achieve Objectives

The training workshop level (basic to intermediate) included theoretical and hands-on sessions covering a wide range of basic textile conservation principles necessary for proper collections care, including integrated pest management, traditional and scientific conservation methods, exhibitions and storage.

• Representatives from national museums working with textile collections in SEAMEO member countries
• Museum and art gallery representatives from the region working with textile collections
